 | 02:43 pm - Several Memes... Firstly the decade according to davegodfrey
( It starts of hopeful and goes downhill )
And now a letter to my 16 year old self.
( You don't want to do it like that. )
Well that was thoroughly depressing. Happy Christmas. I hope those of you celebrating the solstice had a good time. All the best for the New Year.Ctrl+Enter to post Ctrl+Enter to post Ctrl+Enter to post Ctrl+Enter to post Ctrl+Enter to post Current Mood: pessimistic

 | 11:42 pm - Moar Sewing! Two more cuffs. This time there's very little leatherette, but much more velvet. More Victorian sweatband than fetishwear.
( Pictures behind the cut... )
I think I'll probably add some buttons to the one with the leather on it, it looks a little plain. I'll leave the other on as is though. When I get some more press studs and lace I'm very tempted to make matching ones for the other hand. Current Mood: accomplished

 | 10:14 pm - Snow! The snow is amazing! It's all floaty and pretty and my garden is all covered and gorgeous and the cats are enjoying running round like mad beasts in it.
At 4.00pm we had an all users email at work telling us all to go home because the snow was starting to fall quite heavily. Annoyingly I had som lab bits to finish off before leaving, but left just after 4.30pm. By this time reports of really bad snow East of Andover were starting to come in, including from a colleague's fiance who had taken almost three hours to drive six miles into Basingstoke. Said colleague is hence staying with us tonight, not wanting to brave the ungritted roads between Basingstoke and Reading. The roads from work to home were by and large not too bad - well gritted, and though snow was settling it wasn't icy. People wre driving sensibly slowly, so it took us a while to get home but we did so safely. The only really hairy bit was the two steep hills on the last few miles into Ludgershall - cars were turning round and going back rather than risk the hill, but seeing as the only other roads into Ludgershall involve country lanes I thought I'd best plow on. It turned out to be not too bad provided I took it slowly and steadily, and thankfully didn't have to stop on the slopes. A bus was looking a little uncertain at the dip in between the two hills but he managed to make it up with no problems.
I'm off now until Christmas! Once more I have managed to book holidays during what will probably turn out to be a no-go work day due to the snow. I've been hearing from colleagues in Basingstoke who had to adandon cars and walk the last few miles home, so I'm very glad that the roads weren't too bad round here.
I really want to get out and build a snowman in the garden and take photos of all the prettiness! Here's hoping it hasn't melted by morning. :) Current Location: Ludgershall, UK Current Mood: excited

 | 04:18 pm - More memage - You guys know me well. On the guess-the-pairing meme from last night, only two remain unguessed. So I'ma rewrite them for you.
4. He pretends it's for the money; he's just a big pussy. Together they do crime. 14. A long-distance relationship in space. She dumped him for the boss's son.
THEN, I have another one, from requiem2adream:
Comment and I'll give you three fandoms, for which you must answer these:
01: What got you into this fandom in the first place? 02: Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on? 03: Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.? 04: Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)? 05: Do you think that more people should get into this fandom? Lauren landed me with DC, Buffy and Red Dwarf.

 | 09:46 pm - Pairings and stuff Uh, I have knitting post, but I like guessing memes on occasion, and this looks fun - although it was more fun for me to think them up, I confess.
Pick up to 15 OTPs Describe them in less than 15 words. Have your flist guess the OTP! I'm not a big shipper, so it's not exactly like they're my True paring, but WTFever.
1. She was part of his plan. He planned it. 2. It was already an established relationship before one learned the other's name. 3. He favours his son for promotion; she's never been elected. They need to have babies. 4. It's all about eggs. At midnight. And the senseless violence, but mostly the eggs. 5. She's her girl; she's her good girl. 6. She digs his dress sense (it's the yellow). Shame about living in different universes. 7. She saw a wedding; he won't let it be his funeral. 8. Trying to impress a girl, he found a man - and some terrible lizards. 9. Her wedding ring was a gift from a long dead friend - who didn't stay so. 10. Only for her would he ever stand the duchal regalia. (10a BONUS: well, for her too) 11. That's one highly photogenic illegal sublet. 12. It was all about the monkey pants, whichever way she swung afterwards. 13. No one said dating someone who dresses as your ex professionally was at all healthy. 14. She was half dressed when they met; he gave his life for her. 15. She belongs to him so completely his name might as well be on her collar.
BONUS #16: One lost her career, the other her family. Individually, they fight crime. Current Location: Southgate, N14 Current Mood: tired

 | 01:05 am - A little sewing project... I picked up some leatherette from Boroviks, some cream lacy stuff from John Lewis, and some nice brassy coloured press studs and metal lacing clasps from MacCulloch and Wallis (I do love that shop so very much...) A little glue, string, some basic stitching and I'm quite pleased with this as a first attempt. The string will be replaced with proper laces in fairly short order, but it'll do to make sure the thing works. Ctrl+Enter to post ( Pictures hidden for your convenience... )
And finally an action shot!

 | 07:20 pm I've just got home from the work Christmas party. Last year I dressed as a pirate with an indecently low top and drank far too much - not enough to do anything stupid bu enough to snog my then fiance on the dancefloor (aka work canteen) and feel a little dry the next morning. This year I dressed as Link and was driving, and I actually think I enjoyed the event that much more for being sober. That's not to say I wouldn't have enjoyed having a coupld of glasses and feeling giggly, but I danced better for not drinking, sang karaoke in tune, and am now feeling nice and chilled at home, watching Tom play on a new Xbox game, which apparently involved Miles trying to catch the pretty moving shapes on the TV screen.
With my costume I had an overall win with four people knowing I was Link, and only two thinking I was an elf. :) I'm pretty pleased. One geeky guy proceeded to talk to me about other obscure costumes he was proud of recognising (Rorschach, Hitman) which was quite nice, if a little bizarre.
Still deciding if I'm going to be making mince pies tonight or if I'm just going to sit and watch TV and have a much deserved glass of something cold (finally). Current Location: Ludgershall, UK Current Mood: happy

 | 01:24 pm - Nine Lessons and Carols for Godless People Last night, accompanied by davegodfrey and Andrew, I went to the Nine Lessons and Carols for Godless People at the Bloomsbury. I missed this celebration last year due to the arrival of Abby, but it was definitely worth going this time.
I could have done without the one or two barbed comments directed towards religion and religious people, but they weren't the point. The point was a celebration of life the the world from an atheist, humanist point of view. Brian Cox showed breathtaking pictures of Earth from varying distances (including the Pale Blue D). Ben Goldacre told us about the nocebo effect - in which placebos also cause the unwanted, yet expected, side effects of the drug they are emulating. And Alan Moore (Yes, that Alan Moore) explained why he worships a second century snake god.
It was also the first time I genuinely wanted to heckle a comedy performance, when Chris Addison claimed a dinosaur had bee carbon dated. On checking this morning, I see that Paolo was as well last night, and tweeted his mistake (Paolo later corrected his own mistake) . Oh, and Alan Moore later rolled out the old "centaurs are insects" chestnut, as if hexpody was a more important character than a bony endoskeleton. But that's another post.
The star of the show for me, though, was Baba Brinkman; a hip hop artist whose back catalogue (Spotify Link) is loaded with literary references. He performed a couple of songs from his Rap Guide to Evolution, which I then had to pick up in the foyer, and which delightfully sports a label saying For Educational Use Only . The project was commissioned by Mark Pallen at Birmingham University, who also reviewed the lyrics, making this, in Baba's words: The only Hip Hop album to be peer reviewed . Anyway, it reminded me how much I can like Hip Hop when it's saying what I want to hear. Baba may have read what he needed to know just for the project, but he really gets evolution - from group selection and altruism to artificial selection, sexual selection and the important and useful application of evolutionary psychology (Survival of the Fittest). Yeah, he seems to operate under the ev.psych assumption that human differences are innate an dismisses memes with one line - but the he continues to illustrate and prove memetics with a couple of his songs, but specifically Performance, Feedback, Revision:

 | 12:00 am Duncan is an excellent writer, and this post explains exactly why I like the "Rage Against The Machine for Xmas No. One" campaign. Especially given Simon Cowell's recent "waaah its not fair on the act who won". Frankly that alone is enough for me to support the aims. Just because you won a contest to find this year's blandest most radio-friendly singer does not mean you automatically get to have a number one. Isn't winning the contest and getting a record contract enough?Ctrl+Enter to post As the organisers say "its just a bit of fun", and it would be nice to see a song that I actually like up in the charts again.

 | 10:55 am - National Needlework Archive Exhibition I sent a couple of items off for the National Needlework Archive Christmas Exhibition. This has just closed, and I have heard back from the organisers:
"Many thanks for letting us have the scarf and picture for our exhibition. They were much admired and people were interested in a workshop."
Sounds really promising - I will be following this up!

 | 09:56 am - Work Christmas Party dillema It's the work do on Friday, and I don't have the time or the energy at the moment to create a new costume, so it needs to be something I already own. The theme is 'characters through the ages'.
I was tempted to wear the badger suit, and go as Badger from Wind in the Willows, but both the practical and security aspects of that were too prohibitive. Apparently there are a few Robin Hood characters in our group, and I do like the idea of painting a little pencil moustache on! But I'm leaning towards Link, since I already own the whole costume and it doesn't need any modification.

 | 04:53 pm I'm really starting to come down with post-show blues now. I'm missing all the people. You spend so much time with the other singers, as well as the crew, costume, makeup and music teams - in the last week we were pretty much living in each others pockets. To come from that back to reality is kind of hard. I was a little sad earlier but we had Keith and Charly staying over to distract me, and I've been busy making fudge and cooking dinner, but now I've stopped and it's evening and I know I'm not about to head over to the city hall I'm feeling a little low. I'm not sure if I'm missing the people, the buzz, the singing or whether it's a mixture of all of the above, but not having in in my life all of a sudden is not good. It's making me really want to be involved in the next show, but I have my reasons for not doing that one.
I also know how much my voice has improved over the past months - I've definitely expanded my range, though I'm not at the level I'd like to be. The thought of not doing regular singing and perhaps losing a little of that ability frightens me slightly. I'm not sure how much of the improvement comes from confidence and how much is simply working on the singing and improving my technique, but I don't want to lose it and have to start again! A fair few of the other principles were telling me to go for a bigger role next time, and I'd really like to - but that will rely on me keeping up my singing ability. I'll have to make sure the work choir stays busy and we start working towards more concerts there.
Right - back to wrapping more Christmas presents then! Current Location: Ludgershall, UK

 | 01:20 pm I've started my Christmas preparations by making fudge! Vanilla and raisin fudge, to be precise. I've never made fudge before, and so far it's going fairly well - it's at least smooth and creamy and fudge-tastin, but I've poured it into the tin and it's refusing to set! The recipe advises 5-10 minutes before setting to a soft and cuttable stage, but it's been 15 and it's still runny. I'll just have to keep an eye on it...
I think I need to get all scintific and find a temperature melting prfile for sugar crystals - I'm assuming the reason that the mixture stops at a certain temperature for about 10 minutes while boiling before changing consistancy and continuing to heat is because the sugar is doing something at that stage. But I always get paranoid that my hob's not hot enough! This time it stopped at 110oC before going all thick an gloopy and finally getting up to soft ball (116oC). After softballing I added the vanilla and raisins and beat it until nice and creamy. Now I just have to hope it sets!
Fudge will help stave off the post-Mikado blues I feel. :) Current Location: Ludgershall, UK Current Mood: creative
